A 14-year-old boy died after a shark attack off the coast of California’s Kern County, authorities said.
The incident occurred Friday in the town of Lompoc about a mile east of Lassen, officials said.
Officials were trying to determine the cause of the death, and their investigation is ongoing, authorities in Lompoca said in a statement.
They did not say whether anyone else was injured.
The boy was found unconscious by his father, who had been swimming with a friend, authorities reported.
The father told police that the boy swam with the shark and swam toward the shore.
The shark came up on the boat and struck the boy on the head and chest, the statement said.
It did not identify the boy.
A medical examiner said Thursday that the cause and manner of the boy’s death were undetermined.
The coroner said the death could be accidental or it could be a homicide.
