A man’s bizarre encounter with a shark in Dubai has prompted a wave of comments on social media, with many of those commenting calling the man a hero.
The video posted by a user on the social networking site Facebook shows a man on the beach as he goes out with friends on a warm summer’s day.
The man is seen heading towards the water, while another man is standing in the distance, looking out towards the sea.
At one point, the two men make eye contact, but then the man appears to jump in the water and swam away.
The incident has sparked a strong response on social networks.
People have been praising the man for his brave behaviour.
“He is a hero, man, he was on his own beach, no shark,” wrote one user on Facebook.
“Just amazing, just amazing, a hero,” said another.
“We need more heroes like him,” wrote another.
The Facebook user also wrote: “Thank you @shark_livesmatter for saving lives.”
Shark bites are a major cause of death in the UAE.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were 6,000 reported shark bites in 2017, up from 3,600 in 2016.
A spokesperson for Dubai’s Health Ministry said the incident has prompted an investigation by the Dubai Police Department.
“It’s a matter of the police,” he said.
“The police are investigating it and we will be issuing the man with a summons.”
